Kingfisher Bay (K'gari)

Trade-wind refuge on the west of K'gari.

Anchor south or north of the resort jetty in sand holding, in the lee of the island. Excellent shelter from the prevailing southeasterlies and a short tender to the resort. Watch the ferry lane and the tender traffic.

Garrys Anchorage

The Great Sandy Strait's classic overnighter.

A narrow, protected reach between K'gari and Stewart Island in the Great Sandy Strait. Mud and sand holding, mangrove-lined and glassy on most nights. A mandatory stop for anyone transiting the strait north or south.

Moon Point (K'gari)

Northern strait, sand-island shelter.

A wide sandy anchorage off the northwestern tip of K'gari, popular with cruising boats heading into or out of the strait. Good sand holding, protected from the trades and a long white beach for a leg stretch.

Wathumba Creek (K'gari)

The northwest creek anchorage.

A tidal creek on the northwest side of K'gari with all-round shelter once inside. Read the bar carefully on entry and pick your tide. Once in, one of the most protected anchorages on the island.

Day and settled-night anchoring off Urangan.

Anchor off the western sandy beach in the lee of Big Woody, a short run north of Urangan. Sand holding, calm in a westerly and a beach to yourself most weekdays.

The remote northern anchorage.

Anchor off the northern beaches of K'gari in the lee of the point. Sand holding, protected from the trades and a serious sense of remoteness. Settled weather only — the swell wraps in on anything with north in it.
